Travelling by air

"All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go ... I'm leaving on a jet plane, don't know when I'll be back again." ~ John Denver
TRAVEL BY PLANE
There is a lot of important vocabulary to learn if you ever travel by plane. Let's look at some of the more important words and phrases that will help your trip go smoothly:
* check-in counter: This is the first place you go in the airport. You show your plane ticket here (and passport if you're traveling internationally) and turn in your luggage.
* customs: This is the procedure for inspecting goods and baggage when entering a country. A customs official might ask you if you're carrying certain items in your suitcase, or he may inspect what's inside.
* baggage claim: This is the area in the airport where you can pick up (or "claim") your luggage after your trip.
* take off: This is the point when the airplane leaves the runway; the act of becoming airborne.
* landing: This is the point at the end of the trip, when the airplane begins its descent and "lands" on the runway.

(minutes/hours) or distance (yards/miles, meters/kilometres) from where you
are.

How long does it take?
~ It takes about 20 minutes by car.
~ It's a 20-minute drive.
~ It's a few minutes from here. (A few means 3 or more, but not many!)
